Vice prime minister of Uzbekistan Adham Ikramov has been approved as head of the country’s Fencing Federation, National Olympic Committee announced.

Previous chairman Sobir Ruziyev stepped down at the federation’s extraordinary conference on 18 September. The management and the trainers were criticised for insufficient preparation for the Brazil Olympic Games (no fencers from Uzbekistan participated in the Games).

Deputy minister for culture and sports affairs Murad Aliyev in his speech said the leadership of the federation failed to set correct targets.

Sobir Ruziyev, three-time fencing world champion and former head of the National Olympic Committee, will remain at the federation as the advisor, while Nodira Alimova retained her position as secretary general.

The new head of the Fencing Federation has set the target to win Olympic licenses and medals at Tokyo Games in 2020.
