Renowned Japanese archaeologist Kyudzo Kato, who spent many years working in Uzbekistan, died on 12 September at the age of 94 in Surkhandarya region, Jahon news agency reported.

Kyudzo Kato was honorary professor of National Ethnological Museum of Japan, holder of Uzbekistan’s Dostlik (Friendship) order and honorary citizen of the Uzbek city of Termez.

Author of numerous works on Uzbekistan, Japanese professor was a close friend of the country and loved the Uzbek people, calling Uzbekistan his second motherland.

When he first visited Uzbekistan in the 1960s, Kyudzo Kato became deeply interested in the ancient history of the region. He has greatly contributed to the boosting of the Japanese-Uzbek cooperation.

For over 25 years, the scientist collaborated with the Academy of Sciences and other scientific institutions of Uzbekistan. He participated in various projects, conducted archaeological works in the southern Surkhandarya region (Dalvarzintepa, Karatepa, Holchayan, Fayoztepa). The results of his researches have been reflected in school textbooks on history of Uzbekistan.
