Delegates of the 71st Session of the UN General Assembly commemorated the first President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov with a minute of silence on 16 September, UN News Center reported.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon stated that he had been deeply saddened by the death of President Islam Karimov. He rendered homage to the efforts of the head of state in strengthening strong partnership between Uzbekistan and UN, as well as regional and global peace and security.

Head of UN noted that Islam Karimov had actively promoted the Treaty on the zone free from nuclear weapons in Central Asia, which came into force in 2009.
